Short Program—The Numbers. Mark Lukens of HREC will provide an update on recent hotel sales and performance. HREC is the nation’s premier real estate advisory and brokerage organization specializing exclusively in the lodging and gaming industries. Mark is in charge of HREC’s Seattle office. He has 25 years of experience in hospitality real estate and holds the MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute.
Centerpiece Program: “New Hotel Development”. Two highly capable hotel developers will discuss unique challenges in recent, new-build hotel projects and how the challenges were overcome. They will be joined by a hotel-industry finance veteran who will share insights about how new-development projects are currently being financed and structured.
Panelists:
Robert Olson, Founder and CEO of R.D. Olson Development, (Irvine, California). Bob guides his company’s strategic vision with an active, hands-on approach toward every facet of the company’s construction and development. The company has developed hotels nationwide, with an emphasis on the Western U.S. and Hawaii, and was named 2014 Developer of the Year by Marriott International. Bob’s establishment of the company in 1997 followed almost 20 years as founder and CEO of R.D. Olson Construction Company, which specializes in hotel projects of all kinds.
Bob’s discussion will include the Pasea Hotel & Spa at Huntington Beach, CA, an independently-branded, 250-room project that is currently under construction.
Gregory Steinhauer, President, American Life, Inc. (Seattle, Washington). Greg directs all of American Life’s large scale development projects and oversees SODO Builders, the company’s in-house construction company. American Life’s $1 billion portfolio includes hotels in Atlanta, Southern California, and Seattle. Its current projects include the $250 million mixed use, hotel, and conference center project currently under construction in the North Lot of Seattle’s Century Link Field.
Greg’s discussion will include the unique, dual-branded Marriott Courtyard/Residence Inn at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles, a 393-room, $168 million project that opened in July, 2014.
Greg O’Stean, Chief Develpment Officer, Carlson Rezidor (and formerly Managing Director, Piper Jaffray & Co., (Atlanta, Georgia). Greg has been the Chief Develpment Officer of Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group since March 3, 2015. Before March 3, Greg served as co-head of Piper Jaffray’s Hospitality Finance Group, a provider of hotel investment banking services and the leading financier of convention center and conference center hotel projects. Greg’s recent projects at Piper Jaffray include several high-profile new-build hotels. Greg is a well-known hotel industry veteran, having held senior positions with Westin, IHG, Starwood, GE Capital and Access Point Financial.
Greg’s discussion will include metrics, challenges and solutions for financing new-build hotel projects.

Irvin Sandman, Attorney – Counselor, Sandman Savrann PLLC (Seattle, WA). Sandman Savrann is a national law firm devoted exclusively to providing comprehensive legal counsel to the hospitality industry. Irv has counseled hotel clients in thousands of hotel matters and transactions regionally, nationally and internationally, including hotel developments, acquisitions and dispositions, financial and entity structuring, management and franchise agreements, operational matters, and dispute resolution. He is the 2008 recipient of the Anthony Marshall Award for lasting contributions to hospitality law, the past president of the Hospitality Industry Bar Association, and editor-in-chief of the Washington State Hospitality Law Manual, Third Edition (2012).
