Short Program—Transaction Update. Mark Lukens of HREC will provide an update on recent hotel sales in the region, as well as new hotel developments that are currently in the pipeline. HREC is the nation’s premier real estate advisory and brokerage organization specializing exclusively in the lodging and gaming industries. Mark is in charge of HREC’s Seattle office. He has 25 years of experience in hospitality real estate and holds the MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute.
Centerpiece Program: “Hotel REITS”. We are pleased to have executives from four major hotel REITS on our panel. Learn about how REITS “think”, what our panelists’ REITS are looking for, and how they work with developers, management companies, owners, and consultants to help deal flow. Participate in the Q and A.
Panelists:
Jeff Dauray, VP Acquisitions, RLJ Lodging Trust (Bethesda, MD). Jeff joined the RLJ in 2009 as a senior team member responsible for sourcing and negotiating hotel acquisitions. Since then he has sourced and negotiated $500 million in investments. Jeff is a 26-year veteran of institutional investment real estate, having held senior positions in real estate private equity, investment hotel brokerage, investment banking and asset management. RLJ’s portfolio includes 148 select service hotels (bearing primarily Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt brands).
Daniel Hansen, President and Chief Executive Officer, Summit Hotel Group (Austin, TX). Beginning in 2003, Dan has served in the positions of VP Investor Relations, Executive Vice President in charge of acquisitions, and currently as President and CEO. He has extensive experience in the hospitality industry as well as a capital markets background, including eleven years with Merrill Lynch. Summit’s current portfolio includes 89 hotels in 22 states, including premium branded upscale and upper midscale segments (Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Starwood, and Hyatt brands).
Chris King, Vice President, DiamondRock Hospitality (Bethesda, MD). Chris joined DiamondRock at its formation in 2004 and is currently serving as the senior member of management responsible for hotel acquisitions, dispositions and corporate strategy. Previous roles at DiamondRock have included asset management, corporate finance, and investor relations. Prior to DiamondRock, Chris was part of Marriott International’s development finance team and evaluated hundreds of management and franchise opportunities globally. DiamondRock’s portfolio consists of 26 hotels, including premium full service, urban select service and destination resorts.
Sam Reynolds, EVP and Director of Acquisitions/Dispositions & Portfolio Management, Apple REIT Companies (Richmond, VA). Over the last 14 years, Sam has purchased over 300 hotels for Apple REIT companies and today heads Apple’s acquisition department. Mr. Reynolds remains an active buyer and will continue to head the acquisition and disposition process of real estate assets, primarily hospitality, to add to his nearly six billion dollars in real estate transactions over his career. The Apple companies currently hold 191 hotels nationwide, with primarily Marriott and Hilton brands (both select service and full service).

Irvin Sandman, Attorney – Counselor, Sandman Savrann PLLC (Seattle, WA). Sandman Savrann is a national law firm devoted exclusively to providing comprehensive, first-choice legal counsel to the hospitality industry. Irv has counseled hotel clients, as lead counsel, in thousands of hotel matters and transactions regionally, nationally and internationally, including hotel developments, acquisitions and dispositions, financial and entity structuring, management agreements, franchising and operational matters, and dispute resolution. He is the 2008 recipient of the Anthony Marshall Award for lasting contributions to hospitality law, the past president of the Hospitality Industry Bar Association, and editor-in-chief of the Washington State Hospitality Law Manual, Third Edition (2012).
