Short Program—The Numbers. Mark Lukens of LW Hospitality Advisors (LWHA) will provide an update on recent hotel sales and performance. LWHA provides advisory, valuation, feasibility, investment counseling, asset management, and transactional services focused exclusively on hotels, resorts, gaming properties, and conference center assets worldwide. Mark has over 25 years of experience in hospitality real estate and holds the MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute.
Centerpiece Program: “Boutique Hotels”. Three highly-experienced and recognized hotel executives from three, leading hotel companies will discuss what’s happening with “boutique hotels.” Have the new “boutique brands” co-opted the boutique segment? What does the Kimpton sale to IHG tell us about the future of boutique hotels? What are the near-term and long-term prospects for the boutique segment? Learn about the changing, fast-moving currents in this dynamic sector. Participate in the Q and A.
Panelists:
Jim Alderman, Chief Development Officer, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, (San Francisco, California). Jim is responsible for Kimpton’s development, brand, and corporate development objectives. Jim has more than 30 years of experience in the industry and has held senior positions at Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Wyndham, Bristol Hotels, and Holiday Inn Worldwide, and Access Point Financial. Kimpton operates 59 boutique hotels in 30 cities, including both independently branded hotels (such as the Sir Francis Drake) and Kimpton’s Monaco and Palomar hotels.
David Kuperberg, Chief Development Officer, Début Hotel Group, (Los Angeles, California). David is responsible for the growth of the hotel portfolio of Début Hotel Group, the brand development arm of Hampshire Brand, Hotel & Asset Management. Début’s brands include Augustus, Dream, Time, Unscripted and Night. Before Début, David held positions at Wyndham Hotels and True North Capital, including Wyndham’s Senior Director of Mergers and Acquisitions and Wyndham’s Vice President of Development and Strategy. Début currently operates nine boutique hotels and targets expansion to 300 hotels in the next six years.
Russ Urban, Executive Vice President, Business Development, Destination Hotels, (Englewood, Colorado). Russ leads Destination’s asset acquisition and business growth efforts. With more than 30 years of hotel industry experience, Russ has held senior positions at HEI Hotels and resorts, Marriott International, Hotel Partners, CapStar, and Island Resort Collection. Destination and its parent, Lowe Enterprises, operate and own more than 40 independently-branded, luxury and upscale properties, 20 golf courses, 19 full service spas, and 125 bars and restaurants.
Moderator:
Irvin Sandman, Attorney – Counselor, Sandman Savrann PLLC (Seattle, WA). Sandman Savrann is a national law firm devoted exclusively to providing comprehensive legal counsel to the hospitality industry. Irv has counseled hotel clients in thousands of hotel matters and transactions regionally, nationally and internationally, including hotel developments, acquisitions and dispositions, financial and entity structuring, management and franchise agreements, operational matters, and dispute resolution. He is the 2008 recipient of the Anthony Marshall Award for lasting contributions to hospitality law, the past president of the Hospitality Industry Bar Association, and editor-in-chief of the Washington State Hospitality Law Manual, Third Edition (2012).
